Marquis de Graveson built the residence in 1580. Up until the French Revolution, the De Graveson and De Forbin families lived in this luxurious dwelling opening on the most beautiful square of Avignon.

Madame Pierron founded her hotel here in 1799. On her friend Napoléon Bonaparte's insistence, she gave it the name that it still bears today: Hôtel d’Europe.

Hotel Europe is the only hotel from Avignon that appeared in the first Michelin Guide (1900).

Over the course of the 19th century, various personalities have stayed here—Queen Astrid of Spain in 1832, Victor Hugo in 1839, as well as Charles Dickens and John Stuart Mill (the English economist and philosopher). In the first Michelin Guide, published in 1900, Hôtel d'Europe was the only hotel from Avignon mentioned. Since then, the Hotel has been in every edition of this renowned guide.
